Backer Boards in Bathroom

When having tiles laid on a bathroom floor, is it customary to lay backer boards?

"Easier to lay on a board yeah. If the subfloor is plywood or boards,, then an uncoupling matting would be needed"

"Backer boards are use commonly now in preference to plywood as there are no moisture issues to contend with as can be the case if ply gets soaked or suffers water ingress"
