"Easier to lay on a board yeah. If the subfloor is plywood or boards,, then an uncoupling matting would be needed"

"Backer boards are use commonly now in preference to plywood as there are no moisture issues to contend with as can be the case if ply gets soaked or suffers water ingress"

"Not if its concrete or a solid floor.
If its wood, you would need to make sure the sub floor is solid. Prime the floor with pva or tile primer fix the backer board down with adhesive. An screw down.
You can also use vidi board or jacko boards.
But these will need to be fixed with adhesive.
Screws and washers to form a solid sub floor.
You could also use detra matting if you need to keep things low."
