Are brick jointers really necessary?

Is a brick jointer just for aesthetic purposes or does it have a practical purpose?

"Is mainly for asthectics and compacts the joint helping the water to run of the face of the wall.
However if it's an internal wall the mortar can be simple cut of with the trowel."
