Are Bissell SpotClean cleaners any good?

Just wondering if any cleaners have tried Bissell's SpotClean cleaner? Is it any good at removing stains from carpet? I've got two young kids who are always spilling things and I think this might be good to have.

"Hi Lauren there are a couple of reasons domestic carpet cleaners shouldn’t be used.

It is important for the cleaner to know what the carpet is made of, backing material and carpet style (twist, woven etc)

Domestic cleaners generally don’t have the power that a professional cleaning machine has to extract the moisture. The user also has a tendency to over wet the carpet as the chemicals used are weak and which can cause permanent damage. Carpets are left wet with the chemicals remaining. Any carpet cleaners aim is to use as little water as possible.

A pro carpet technician should :

Test the carpet and select the correct product with the correct PH level.

Vacuum the carpet thoroughly.

Pre treat the carpet with the appropriate chemical.

Using a professional machine, the carpet is then rinsed with an acidic solution to bring your carpet back to a slightly acidic PH level (natural PH level of the carpet)

Treat remaining stains with other products.

Children and carpets are unfortunately not a good match. It would be almost impossible to avoid any spillages. My advice would be to use one or a combination of the following:

Strictly no shoes worn in the house! Dirt and bacteria will transfer to the carpet.

Try eating and drinking in a dining area where the floor surfaces are easily washable.

Washable rugs can be a life saver with children and stored easily.

It’s probably cheaper than you think to hire a carpet technician, charges start from around £25.

Consider stain protection if you have a good quality carpet.

Try cleaning any new spillages straight away with a damp cloth or a dry powder cleaner. This is the safest sometimes the most effective method.

If you are going to buy one of these machines, treat the carpet first, don’t put any products except water in the machine. Use as little water as possible to rinse. Natural fibre carpets are susceptible to browning (brown stains where you have cleaned) browning occurs as a result of chemical or physical reactions with cellulose that is either in the carpet itself or in the base or backing of the carpet. Cellulose is the main component of natural fibers like cotton, linen, jute or sisal which are derived from plants. If your carpet is a natural fibre you will need to use an acidic rinse.

Hope this helps.

Take care
Bryan"

"They are good for the odd spill or stain, if it’s for a larger area I’d recommend getting the carpet professionally cleaned as it can leave floors/sofas quite wet still which can lead to mould and mildew smells and therefore costing more in the long run if you have to replace carpets and sofas etc."

"Bissel and Hoover have a great set of carpet / spot cleaners, if the carpet is already clean and you are using it for a one-off stain then it should be ok, use a good carpet solution that doesn't bleach or lighten the surface - some supermarket products do."

"I use one of these, if you get to the spillage quick enough then should be a great tool for spillages."

"Yes of course, if the spillage is seen to straight away this will make it easier to get out.

Other brands can be used also, I know some places in the UK (supermarkets) sometimes have them on rental, so this is good for spring cleans etc"

"it's good for cleaning, but now it also depends on factors such as what solutions you use before for cleaning, etc"

"The BISSELL Spotclean Pet Pro is an excellent way of fighting stains, it'll do a lot better than a bottle of stain remover and it's just about portable enough to be used on a car's interior. Everything feels robust and well thought out, even if it's about 10% bigger than it needs to be."
