Apps and software to visualise extension design

Question

I'm not very good at visualising things, so I'm struggling to decide on the size and design of my extension. Do architects have software or apps that can help with this and is this something I can request when engaging one?

Hi, yes absolutely! 
Architects have different tools to create 3D models of their proposed designs. The most commonly used software is ‘Sketchup’ but there are plenty of other ones such as Rhino, Microstation etc you will be able to see your extension externally and internally, with materials, kitchen joinery, dining table etc you can even walk through and look in all directions. Softwares are pretty powerful nowadays and the images are very realistic. 
If this is a service you want it is important you ask the architect before you appoint them as not all architects include this in their quote (this will be an additional cost to plans as 3D modelling takes a lot of time) you can ask them to send you examples of images they’ve produced for previous projects so you can see how it will help you with your own projects. Yes most professional architects will likely use Autodesk Revit - which has its own functions for rendering/visualisation. 

Another suggestion would be blender which is free software where the house CAD model can be imported and rendered. 

By rendering I mean add photo-realistic properties.
