advice on how to fix a leaking chimney DIY

Water is leaking through my chimney. I would like to fix it by myself. What tools will I need and how can I make the work as safe as possible?

"Have it scaffolded round if your not used to roofs. Check the top of chimney, check brickwork in good state and check all lead flashings and soakers."
