How do you know if a wasp nest is old or in use?

An active nest will have wasps going in and out continuously. wasp queens build a new nest every year so if you're seeing the nest and there is no activity then it's harmless and will not be re-used.

Workers usually flying out from the nest hole if nothing flying out then the nest is not in use or old

You will usually see wasps entering and leaving if in use caution is the word

Wasp activity will be evident if it is active. If this is in a loft space you will probably be able to see external activity around rhe roof or fascia area👍🏻
