Use of SIPs and thermal bridging

Can SIPs be used partially, so on parts of walls. Or does thermal bridging stop them from being efficient?

"Hi,

It really depends on the specifics as with all things in building. Generally speaking though if you are going to mix and match different wall build ups, it's very important to have a continuous internal insulation skin such as insulated plasterboard etc.

We do this a lot combining steel frame with timber frame infill and achieve excellent thermal performance. Even with an internal skin though you still have to pay attention to thermal bridging and try and rectify using thermal blocks to break the bridge.

Thanks"

"Hi Cheryl,

They will not be efficient if used partially. Condensation can possibly occur on the non insulated external wall resulting in moisture to penetrate through also cause mould. Thermal boarding this part of the wall may help or consider full SIP. Thanks."
