Project managing an extension

What are the benefits and disadvantages of project managing a house extension? How can I tell whether I should do this or leave it to a professional? Does it depend on the type of extension that’s planned?

"Within starting stages is the most crucial time in the project due to levels and plans being correct from the of set, having a trusted labour team does help a lot .

It's more to the finishing side to your project you'd want to be more involved/managing side as labour have to work in stages and over one another to ensure the installation side to fitting is installed properly

"The answer to this depends on the size of the work and your experience with dealing with building works. Are you able to organise different trades at the required times of the job? If so are you confident you can organise materials? I wouldn't advise trying to run a decent sized extension on your own unless you have a decent amount of experience in this. Although to say that I assume you have limited building knowledge and experience, I will say that when you know what you're doing it can be stressful enough sometimes especially with the added obstacle that is covid! Hope this helps, Mason."

"You can keep an eye on expenditures on materials ..

As some builders, (not all) but some make money on materials as well"

"It might cost more to have the project managed but, if you have a competent manager, then you have more reassurance that the work done is correct. Proper setting out and determining floor finish levels, materials to be used, appearance, etc. is vital to a successful build.

"Hi any one can project manage, you just need to have a good schedule of works and speak to your builders to make Sure it is possible in your time scale. You need to make sure you can keep 2 steps in frount of your builders ordering materials and any visits to site from any building control people or any other parties involved. You can save a lot of money if you project manage yourself"
