Making secondary glazing efficient

To get the best efficiency from secondary glazing, should it be installed as near to the existing windows as possible?

"Ideally you should have a minimum of 100mm for the secondary glazing to work well. If you can achieve a greater distance then that's for the better."

"9/10 ther fitted as close to the excising window as possible other wise there a big cold spot inbetween the 2 pains of glass"

"In the past I have been told the closer the better but I have also seen 50 to 100 ml in between. Most houses don't use secondary glazing now if they have new windows fitted. Mainly used on old properties with single glazing or stained glass."
