Keeping home secure while away

Our family is planning to be away from home for almost a month. What sensible steps can we take to keep our home safe during this time? We already have good door locks and window locks.

If you don't have cctv or an alarm system and want a cheap alternative,  get a plug in WiFi camera with motion detection and set it up in your front room.
Grab yourself some wifi light bulbs and put them on timers so it looks like you are home.

Most effective and cheapest way to deter intruders is lights. Install bright LED motion sensor lights outside so if anybody comes near they are visible by neighbours. Inside the house put lights in sockets on timers or ones that turn on when it’s dark. Leave the radio on a radio Channel which have a lot of talking rather than music so it seems people are in the house talking. Make sure people can’t look inside the house easily to check if you are in or not by having net curtains or something similar. Ask a friend or a neighbour to check up on the house and remove any letters sticking out of the letterbox as this shows nobody is attending the property. Apart from that, CCTV & alarm.
