Installing a new cooker hood

We need a cooker hood installed in our kitchen. There is no previously installed hood. It needs to be the recirculating hood. The electric socket is ready.Do we just need an electrician for this? How much is it likely to cost?
Thank you

"Hello! How are you?!

You must keep in mind that it’s not just about connecting your extractor fan. A good professional needs to check the condition of the wall where it will be installed (in many homes, there are no safe conditions for installation), then inspect the cables, sockets, and protections (circuit breakers), and only after that proceed with the installation. A job like this would cost around £150.00 to £200.00.

Always consider the service being carried out and the guarantee of it, not just the price!
This is also a tip for the ‘electricians’ here.

Thank you very much.

"Yes — you’ll mainly need an electrician or kitchen appliance installer who can also mount the hood. Since the socket is already in place and it’s a recirculating model (no external vent), it’s a straightforward job. Typical cost in the West Midlands is around £100–£200, depending on fitting complexity."

Hi Huma,

Yes – for this you just need a qualified electrician.

As you’re having a recirculating hood and you already have a socket in place, the job is usually quite straightforward:
• Fix the bracket and hood to the wall/unit
• Connect the hood to the existing socket / spur
• Check the supply is correctly protected
• Test the hood and show you how to change the filters

If there’s no cutting of cupboards or tiling needed, it’s normally around 1–2 hours’ work, so you’d typically be looking at £80–£150 for labour, depending on your area and access.

If any units need altering, tiles cutting, or the socket needs moving, it can take a bit longer and add to the cost, but it’s still a small job in most homes.

If you’d like a more accurate fixed price, a quick photo of the area above the cooker and the existing socket would help.

Thanks,
Ricki

"In my opinion, don't bother with a recirculating hood, if you can't vent out, better to fit a Dan elsewhere in the kitchen that does"

"If there was no hood there before then how are you saying the socket is ready as this needs to be in the tower part of the fan so not on show and its a fixed piece of equipment which means it needs to be on a fused connection unit as it has to have an isolation point . There are regulations that has to be met so defiantly not a DIYr £50 plus whatever works needs doing"
