How often should carpet be replaced?

We moved into a house with carpet that's maybe 10 to 12 years old. It doesn't look terrible but it's starting to flatten. At what point is it worth replacing versus cleaning?

If it’s a thick carpet like Axminster it’s worth cleaning but if it’s thin carpet I would recommend replacing along with food quality underlay
