How much does underlay installation cost?

Getting new carpet fitted upstairs and the carpet shop want quite a bit extra for underlay and fitting it. Is that normally priced per square metre? Could I reuse the old underlay to save a few quid or is that daft?

To replace with a 10 mm thick foam underlay is usually around £4 per square meter if purchased directly from the fitter. If your existing underlay is under 5 years old and is an 8 to 10 mm thick foam it may be salvageable, However some retailers will tell you it's not suitable in order to upsell and charge you more. Best to take advice of an independent fitter.

Generally most carpet fitters charge the same for fitting with or without new underlay.  Obviously the only charge would be the cost of the underlay.  If financially possible I would suggest is a good idea to replace the underlay but if its in good condition then you could use the old.  Although most carpet manufacturers won't garuntee a new carpet without new underlay
