Hi not necessary I would say its need a maintenance to break down stone build up there are some special tablets for it they only needed once or twice a month as they quiet expensive.  Most important part it's to keep the filter clean depending on usage this can block quiet quickly same as washing machine difference is the type of waste build up in those filters .usually the best is to clean filler manually however they are some special cleaning agents that they breaking down the build up saving unpleasant cleaning doing this manually however those are quiet pricy so if you considering having a washing machine and have the same one long term then follow those options . Yes once a month run your washing machine with an empty load, on the highest setting (hot wash) use a washing machine cleaner or bleach and mold remover.  Also clean the drawer to the washing machine, cleaning out any built up soap power and residue.  Also open the valve on the bottom of the machine to remove and debris

Yes of course...you need to do it at least monthly in a hot long wash with special washing machine cleaner or with soda crystals and vinegar. Also it is important to wash the soap compartment regularly.
