Carpet filtration soiling

What is filtration soiling? And why does it happen?

"Filtration soiling is caused by a gap in the floor boards or under the skirting that is allowing a constant flow of air which carries with it dust an dirt that eventually produces a black line on the carpet. This is hard to remove as it is coming up through the backing of the carpet"

"When air flows through a building, it will mostly escape through ventilation systems, windows and doors, but in the case of poor ventilation in more closed spaces air will escape through any gaps including under doorways, skirting boards, through floor boards and any holes in your carpet."
