Can you have laminate upstairs with soundproofing underneath?

We want laminate on the first floor but we've got noisy neighbours below and a young child. Does acoustic underlay actually make a meaningful difference?

"Yes acoustic underlay for laminate flooring is worth it, it can reduce footstep noise and doubles up as thermal insulation"

"What I’d do in your position
If neighbour relations and child noise are genuine concerns:
Best overall option
Engineered wood or LVT with acoustic backing
(usually quieter than laminate)
If you specifically want laminate
Use:
5–6mm high-density acoustic rubber underlay
decent quality laminate
rugs in high-traffic/play areas
That combination is usually the “sweet spot” for cost vs noise reduction. People generally do report a noticeable improvement compared with standard underlay"

"The underlay will help to keep noise down
But if you’re bedroom floor is not solid I would recommend not to install laminate flooring
However if the floor is solid then yes have you considered acoustic carpet ?"

"True be told it will make a difference in the area of installation.... But it's most definitely not gonna shut noise out..👌"

"Hi, the laminate underlay that is rated as a sound insulator mean that when you are walking with shoes on the laminate is reducing the noise that is travel on the bottom floor."
