Beech tree maintenance

I've moved to a house with a large beech tree in the garden. Do they need any maintenance or do they look after themselves? It looks healthy.

"Keep an eye on the hight and size of the canopy.
Be careful if it is near any cables such as BT or Electrical.
Is it close to your house.
Are the leaves healthy, are there any broken branches?
Is fungi at the base?"

"Most trees will require some maintenance during their lifetime, always check if your trees are in a conservation area and check for tree preservation orders (TPOs) on all your trees on your property."

"If it looks healthy, a mature beech will usually look after itself with very little routine intervention.

Beech trees are generally low-maintenance once established. They don’t need regular pruning and are best left largely untouched unless there is a clear reason, such as deadwood, storm damage, or a specific safety concern.

Good management is mostly about avoiding harm, rather than doing more work:

Don’t compact the soil or disturb the roots (e.g. from parking, digging, or heavy landscaping)

Avoid changes in ground levels around the base

Leave fallen leaves in place where practical, as they benefit the soil

Only prune when necessary, and keep any work light and justified

Large beech trees can be sensitive to root disturbance and excessive pruning, even if they appear healthy at the time. Over-management often causes more problems than it solves.

In short: if it’s healthy and not causing a specific issue, the best approach is usually minimal intervention, with occasional professional checks rather than routine pruning."
