"You'd want to check if the opposite handle works. If it does then the spindle has moved over to far. If both handles don't work then the gearbox has failed and will need changing."

"One of two things.
1. The spindle is too short and has moved out of the handle position, so check to see if the other side works. If it does then this is your answer.
2. Gearbox has broken. If both handles spin then it's definitely a gearbox issue and this will have to be replaced."

"Hi there, at the moment you need a locksmith to install a temporary solution for door to lock and after to find and replace the mechanism, it’s a mechanism fault, it may need full replacement or only middle case. If you want I can come take a look and secure the door."

"You need a new spindle or possibly a new gearbox."

"The problem you mention is rarely with the actual door handle, and is more often than not the spring or spindle inside the mechanism which will be apparent when you remove the door handle unit.
I have found that over time, continual excessive use or force, the square spindle can wear and round off and the spring becomes displaced or broken.

My recomendation is to replace the full door handle instead of just the spring or spindle, but this is a straightforward five-minute job that anyone with a screwdriver can do."
