Have I been overcharged ?

I locked myself out of my house today and called a locksmith to help. He has charged me £800 to drill out a Yale lock and replace with a new one. Is this excessive? It seems a good repair and I needed access to the house quickly so did not have time to get other quotes. Thanks

Oh my God!

This is most severe!

I would have opened the door with no damage for £60.

Only if you requested a new lock would I have charged an additional £40

Yes. He didn't need to drill lock, and didn't need a new lock. Any decent Locksmiths would have got you in with no damage to the lock. Depending on time of day wouldn't have cost you no where near that.

Yes you have been over charged. A good Locksmith would not need to drill the lock and would charge around £100 - £150 to get you in, non-destructively (prices will differ depending where you are in the UK, and time of day, e.g. 'out of hours' would be more expensive). Sorry to say it sounds like you've been the victim of a bait & switch scam. I'll bet the service was initially offered at around £49 and the guy arrived in a car with no sign writing. I would also check their VAT number too as a lot of them charge VAT when not even registered. Report to your local Trading Standards, and Certified Locksmiths & Security.

You’ve definitely been overcharged. A reputable locksmith should always explain the costs before starting the work and provide a clear breakdown of the charges. In most cases, gaining entry and replacing a standard Yale lock should cost a fraction of £800.

This should have been picked the lock will not need drilling out you were over charged by £760 as I whould have charged £40 to pick and unlock if you wanted a new lock this whould have been extra cost of the new lock which will have been a maximum of £40 for the Lock cost which will bring your total to £80 always contact a local locksmith that’s based in your area and always read the reviews

Yes way over the top .
Depends what they had to do .
Only 400.00 would still be a lot to gain axcess .
I charge 150.00 to gain axcess depending on the locking system or what kind of door you have .
If it’s a basic upvc composite style door it would be the same price .
