"Thickness varies but 18mm is good to use. Plywood more expensive but better than chipboard. Will keep its shape and will less chance of being damaged if something is dropped. Another down side is that it will need to be cut to fit but I’d use it every time."

"Depends if you are talking wood or concrete substrate. There are lots of variables with both. Different for all types of finished flooring.
