Additional costs / tools

Is it acceptable for a kitchen fitter to add on things like a new circular saw blade & router blades as additional to his day rate? Was paid £250 cash & I wasn't pre warned I was expected to pay an additional £60 for parts for his tools.

"Hi Kerry, I always add router cutters to the job as you need a new one for every new job.
But a circular saw blade last months assuming it's a laminated or solid wood worktop, so I think that's a little naughty in my opinion. Your fitter should always make you aware of all the consumables in their quote/estimates.
£60 is steep as router cutters are around £15 each."

"When pricing up the job, things like materials, should be included in the price or stated on the quote as extra and will be added to the invoice.
There should never be any hidden cost, if something is found once work has started that needs attention, it should be discussed with the customer before any work is started and a price agreed."

"Hello,

No, this is not acceptable. If you decide to proceed to cover this cost I advise you keep the receipt as you have paid him back for the tools."

"Depending if it was needed for the job. But should of been in the breakdown of the quote"

"Sounds like you supplied the worktops!
His parts are consumable items and should be charged for but he should have discussed this when pricing the job."

"We personally wouldn’t have any hidden costs such as what you’ve mentioned… consumables should be included in the price. The only additional costs should be any unforeseen works that needed to be carried out.
If it was on day rate it should have been agreed before hand day rate plus materials"

"Personally I would of tried to get the router blade cost put in with the kitchen or mentioned that as an extra cost at the beginning, as this blade can only be used on one kitchen, then it is too blunt to use again, but circular saw blades are part of a tradesmen's general running costs.
Hope this helps."

"No this should be calculated in his day rate or negotiated during price work"

"It’s a two part answer.
For me when ever I do a kitchen installation things like blades, router bits are covered within the price. A decent tradesman will need a new sharp blade or router bit when installing a kitchen to avoid damaging the material.

If the person who completed the installation gave you a day rate then that’s fine. In my opinion they should increased their day rate to cover consumables.

Equally the customer should be happy that the job is installed correctly with no damage."

"absolutely not , contractor should take into account his tools bill on all his quotes I would not have paid"
