"Hi,
A wafer is a type of component used to match the pattern of your key for lock operation. More often than not a mortise has levers, cylinder/barrel uses pins, older car keys use wafers instead of pins and small cam locks filing cabinets, garage T handles use wafers. Another type of wafer is used in abloy locks if you search this it will give you a better understanding."
