Shower trap issue

Hi, we recently moved into our current house. The bathroom has now an awful sewer smell. On inspection we found it to be coming from the shower drain (walk in shower - tiled floor). I lifted the grill and saw no water seal - no sitting pool of water - and it looks like the shower trap has been removed. Water flows directly down and so it looks like the smell is coming directly from the sewer. My newborn sleeps close by and so my wife is very worried now! However, I have no idea how to get this fixed/replaced as I can't find the brand name on any of the bathroom fixtures. Any help/advice hugely appreciated....

"Hi

Very difficult to change this trap as they are concreted in so firstly see if you can get the cup that should be sitting in the trap. Secondly, the water might be getting pulled out of the trap due to a vacuum effect when someone for instance flushes the toilet. Fit an air admittance on all appliances i.e basin this will help there being less suction created when bath emptied or a toilet flushed. Hope this helps.

"If you can forward a picture of the waste along with dimensions we can certainly assist in identifying the correct trap seal."

"May be an option to cut a hole in the ceiling below and add a trap?"

"Hello,
It is entirely possible that there are components missing from the waste. I would take some images, measure the internal dimensions and go to a reputable plumbers merchant where they (hopefully) would be able to identify the brand. Take the top grill too. To be honest, there arnt many brands so you may be in luck. If you’re in the north west, James Hargreaves plumbers merchants are a good shout but the national outlets such as Plumbase, PTS, City plumbing etc also good starting points.
Good luck

"Hi, you need to get a water / waste trap installed ASAP. You’re right in thinking the smell is coming from the sewer.

I had the same thing when renovating my downstairs toilet, one thing you can do is not use the shower and block off the hole which will stop the smell.

"You will need to get access to drain, whether it means lifting tiles or getting access below floor. Cut into drain fit a trap at grating on wet floor tray and connect to drain. If necessary retile and grout."
