Making a window opening in a timber framed house

Hello, I have just bought a 7yr old house and would like to put a new window in the living room as there is only a small one at the back of the room. When I got the paperwork whilst I was buying the house, it said that my house is timber framed. I guess my questions are:

1) how do we know where the structural frame beams are when it looks just like a regular house? (i.e. it's brick outside and plastered walls inside) Can we look under the floor boards upstairs?

2) is is more expensive to fit windows in a timber framed house?

3) how do I know if a builder/window fitter is competent in fitting windows in a timber frame house? What questions can I ask to check?

Thanks
