"The crack would progressively get worse if caused by some sort of movement. Your best bet would be to get it repaired using a resin bond that would stop it from spreading further."

"1. Do NOT ignore it — Even thin cracks can widen over time, let water in, or signal movement. The main risk is water penetration: rain will get into the crack, freeze/thaw, expand, and make the gap much bigger over winter.

2. Keep an eye on it and monitor movement

◦ Clean out any loose dust/debris from the crack.

◦ Mark across the crack with a thin pencil line or stick a small piece of masking tape/plaster over it, then write the date on it.

◦ Check it every 2–4 weeks. If the line splits or the tape cracks after a few months, movement is active — needs professional investigation. If it stays the same for 3–6 months, it’s likely stabilised.

3. Temporarily seal it to stop water damage

◦ For now, fill the crack with exterior‑grade mortar repair, masonry sealant, or flexible exterior silicone. This keeps rain out, prevents frost damage, and stops the stonework from crumbling further while you arrange proper repairs."
