How much space do I need for a kitchen island?

I'm trying to work out if my kitchen is big enough for an island. How much space do I need to leave between the edge of the worktops and the island? Is there a standard sized gap?

"The minimum measurement from the island to any other wall or cabinet should be no smaller than 900mm. You will need more if there is a oven or fridge door (1200mm) not to feel cramped when using the kitchen

Hope this helps"

"when ive fiited islands the minimum space around the island depends on whats on each side but as a guide i would want to leave at least 800mm if there are units or appliances on any sides then 1000mm this allows for doors and draws to be opened."

"Hello, if your question is in regarding the distance from cabinets to a free standing island it is recommended that you have a space of 900mm - 1000mm of space surrounding it. This is to allow for if a cupboard is open you’ll be able to walk past an open door.

Here’s a link to a design page that you may find helpful also has a diagram.

"Normally the edge should be about 20/30mm and the space for getting around the island can be a minimum of 600mm so you can walk round and still be able to open other cupboards"

"Hi MICHAEL it really depends how big you would like it to be, a normal breakfast bar worktop is 900mm wide and then the length is depending on how long you want it /can have it depending on how much room you have in your kitchen. Some People use wall units with feet screwed on and then cut the worktop down so it’s shallower than 900mm"

"If possible I like to leav a clear space of 1100mm
Assuming the island is 1000mm that’s 2.1m needed plus’s you will want to make sure there is enough room for passing on the far side"
