How can you tell when the first and last frosts take place?

How do you tell when the first frost is taking place and likewise, the last frost of the winter time?

"Hi,
I would be surprised if we were to get any further frosts this season and if in the unlikely event, it shouldn't be so harsh to the extent it would cause damage to seedlings!
September/October is when the next frosts are likely and this all depends on where in the country you are. The further north, the earlier frosts can be expected.
I hope that helps.
