Do thermostatic radiator valves go on flow or return?

One radiator has the pipes coming up differently to the others and I’m not sure if putting the valve on the wrong side will cause problems? Does it matter which way round a TRV is fitted on a radiator?

"Hi June, most TRVs are bi-directional now. It doesn’t matter anymore which side you put them on.
Flow and return have to be the right way on most designer radiators though. But the TRV is can go either side"

"Good morning,

I hope you are well.

It does not matter which way the TRV is fitted. Either flow or return will work as long as the TRV is a 2 way which most likely is."

"TRVs are best fitted on flow as it allows balancing of system. But can be fitted on return."
