Can water supply pipe from mains run partially above ground?

Hi,

We have an external water leak. A contractor has been today and one option given is replacing the pipe altogether rather than trying to trace the leak and repair. This I am happy with. However they have suggested putting the supply pipe under the driveway from the meter on the pavement, then bringing it up in the garage (so it will be above ground in the garage), running it the length of the garage and then connecting it to an existing water pipe that we have in the garage for the washing machine.
They would then install a new stopcock, and block off our existing one.
Reason for this option is to save having to take up the floor in the house.
Does this sound right?

"It would be acceptable yes. However something to bare in mind is when a water main is in a garage it may be prone to freeze in the winter months so insulation around the pipe is a necessity."

"Hello. Most mains water pipes are fine to be buried in the ground. This is done in order to prevent the pipe from bursting at prolonged subzero temperatures. Also when it is very warm the water stays cool when it is buried in the ground. So it is preferable not to mount them above ground."

"This is absolutely fine. As long as the cold water main come up inside the dwelling.
I would recommend lagging the pipes in the garage."

"Its okay as long as the pipe is secured and not in the busy area cause this pipe will have almost 2 bar pressure i guess and if someone hits the pipe it will be a mess"

"Yes this is fine, once you're inside the fabric of the property.
I would recommend insulating all exposed pipework within the garage though. As ambient temperatures here would fall below zero in cold snaps. Potentially causing burst pipes.
Good luck with everything"

"Hi Samantha
I understand your concern however rest assured the work that has been advised adears to the water regulations perfectly.
If the pipework is run in plastic, they should eliminate burst pipes during the winter seasons.
I recommend contacting your water distributor as they own the pipe before the stopcock.
If the leak is before the stopcock, the pipework is owned by the company that provide you with the water and they will conduct the work free of charge.
Hope this helps."

"Hi Samantha thanks for your enquiry.

I wouldn’t advise running a water main above ground. Even though in the garage there’s a risk of freezing and your insurance probably wouldn’t cover it.
My advice would be to find a water main replacement company that’s willing to do a proper job.

Kind regards

"Hi Samantha, I wouldn’t recommend running the mains above the ground but if you really have to make sure it’s sealed/ sleeved and safe from the surrounding hazards.
Thanks,"
