Boiler flow temperature

What’s the ideal flow temperature to set my boiler to? Should I alter it between autumn, winter and spring?

"There is no simple answer to this question.

When the boiler manufacturers state their appliance efficiency, it is with a flow temperature of 60°C. For many years, radiators have been sized for the rooms they are cited in with a flow temperature of 70°C. Therefore the room might not get warm enough if you lower the flow temperature.

If that room contains the room thermostat, you might never get it warm enough to switch the thermostat off. You would be gaining some efficiency. However, the boiler would be working 24 hours a day trying to achieve a temperature which it can’t.

If you have a hot water cylinder and lower the flow temperature the hot water cylinder might never get hot enough to switch off on its thermostat. Once again, you could be burning gas 24 hours a day trying to achieve the impossible.

If you have a combi boiler and decent sized radiators, you can play around with the flow temperature and see what works for you. It is not one size fits all."
