Blocking up holes to prevent mice

Is wire wool a good solution for blocking up holes to prevent mice entering the kitchen? I live in a rental and the landlord is a bit slow dealing with it, so I'm looking for a cheap solution.

"Wire wool is good in curtain circumstances, however I personally wouldn’t use it Internally near wires as rodents could of chewed through wires inside the home and by putting wire wool on top of a broken wire your asking for serious fire risk, if it’s around pipe work entering in side your home use cement, we also use expanding foam but this is normally only a temporary measure as again this could be chewed through"

"Wire wool rusts and crumbles in an environment where there's a lot of water around so it's not ideal. Solution is to pack the wire wool in as tight as possible then completely cover it with silicon. point to note is never fill holes if the mice are still around as you may block the mice inside the property. Kill the mice first then proof after"
