Very polite and tidy

**For tiling work, I would strongly advise avoiding this contractor.** The experience was extremely disappointing from start to finish. He initially came out to quote for the job, but on the agreed day he failed to turn up at 9am that he agreed to. He then called to say he could come at 5pm and work until 9pm. I told him this was not suitable and asked that the work be carried out the following day instead. The following day, he arrived approximately two hours late and brought an older contractor with him. I subsequently discovered that the work had effectively been subcontracted to this individual, despite the person who originally quoted for the job being the person I had agreed to hire. It quickly became apparent that the work was not going to be carried out to an acceptable standard. The individual doing the tiling appeared physically unable to carry out the work properly and, in my view, did not demonstrate the level of experience required to work with modern tiles and achieve a professional finish. What made the situation even more frustrating was that the contractor I had actually dealt with and who had quoted for the job spent much of the time sitting in the van while the other individual carried out the work. The quality of the tiling was extremely poor. The tiles were misaligned, badly cut throughout the bathroom and had large, obvious gaps. I repeatedly had to point out areas where the walls had not been properly sealed. What should have been a bathroom in a newly built property was left looking like something from the 1960s. The work continued until around 10pm, at which point I was told the job was finished and that I would have to clean up the remaining grout myself. The damage did not stop there. My wall was damaged during the work, with adhesive applied to areas that were not even supposed to be tiled. I was then told that I would need to purchase sandpaper, remove the adhesive myself and repaint the damaged wall at my own expense. The bathroom was also left in an unacceptable mess. Having inspected the finished work, I am now seriously concerned that the entire installation will need to be removed and redone by another contractor. This will obviously result in significant additional costs. I also made it clear that I was not happy about being expected to clean up the grout myself, particularly given the absolute mess they had left behind. He showed no real concern and simply dismissed it, saying it would be “easy peasy.” I therefore told him that I would hold on to the outstanding balance until I had finished cleaning, especially since he was insisting that the bathroom would look perfect once the grout had been cleaned up. At that point, he surprisingly got the older contractor back out of the van and asked him to attempt to clean the grout. This was now around **11pm**. The grout was already visibly dry on the tiles, and the attempt to clean it was clearly making very little difference. By this stage, I was extremely tired, frustrated and had completely run out of patience. After everything that had happened throughout the day, I simply had to give up and leave it. I am now considering seeking legal advice regarding the cost of putting the work right, the damage caused to my property and the additional expenses I have incurred. The person who originally quoted for the job ultimately had virtually no involvement in carrying out the actual work, which is particularly concerning. Overall, this has been an extremely poor experience. The workmanship, communication, punctuality, supervision and aftercare were all unacceptable. I would not use this contractor again.
