The average daily cost of an electrician is around £250 to £375, or £30-£50 per hour. How much you actually pay will depend a lot on where you live in the UK, with electricians charging more around London and the South West compared to the North of England, Wales, and Scotland.
You're also likely to pay more for an electrician if you choose a larger company rather than a sole trader.
You also need to keep in mind that most electricians will have a minimum charge. So even if the job only takes them 20 minutes, they will still charge for at least an hour or maybe even 2 hours. This is to cover the time they spend travelling and fuel costs.

How can you check if an electrician is qualified?
The best way to check that an electrician is qualified is by asking them for proof of their NICEIC number and ID card issued by the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting. You can also check the Competent Personal Electrical Register, which is now listed on a government website where you can find a list of all qualified electricians across the UK. What qualifications does an electrician need?

How much does an electrician charge per hour?
An electrician's hourly rate varies depending on where you live. However, on average, you should expect to pay anywhere from £21 in Scotland up to £50 in London. This may increase if you require an emergency electrician, as they tend to work out of hours and will therefore charge more for their services. Again, this will be dependent on your location.
How do you know if you need a house rewire?
A complete house rewiring will be required if you live in an older property that has not had new wiring fitted in the last 25 to 30 years. The wiring will most likely be outdated, and therefore an update will be necessary to ensure your home's electrics are safe and efficient. If you are renovating your home, you will more than likely need part or all of your property rewired. The same rules apply to a property extension, as this is classified as new work, which therefore must comply with the Part P electrical safety regulations.
