A Closer Look at the Top 3 Tool Brands

Now that we know the top tool brands for tradespeople, let’s take a closer look at what these brands are all about and what makes them great.

DeWalt

DeWalt was founded in 2024 so has now been a reliable name in the tool’s industry for over 100 years. The DeWalt story began with one person – the man whose name appears on every product – Raymond DeWalt.

Raymond began his training building wagon wheels with his father in Pennsylvania. He had a vision for doing more and completing work more safely and more efficiently. In the early 1920s, he invented and patented the Wonder-Worker, an adjustable radial arm electric saw. This cutting-edge tool saved the user from tedious, backbreaking labour and could accomplish 29 different cutting operations without significantly changing the setup. This revolutionised productivity and profitability on the job site.

The DeWalt brand is continually focused on helping pros save time and money without compromising on safety, power, or quality.

Makita

Makita was founded in Nagoya City in Japan in 1915 under the name of Makita Denski Seisakusho. At the time, the businesses sold and repaired lighting fixtures, motors and transformers. In 1958, Makita marketed a portable electric planer in Japan and became a manufacturer of power tools the following year.

Makita’s has a vision where society and global communities are able to develop for themselves and future generations. By providing the tools, they are ensuring that anything is possible. With a dedicated research and development centre in Japan, the Makita brand has engineers who work hard to constantly improve their products in all aspects.

Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Tool company began in 1924 and has always focussed on developing innovative solutions that deliver increased productivity and unmatched durability for professional construction users.

Milwaukee Tool achieved a huge step forward in the industry when they invested the technology needed to enable the use of lithium-ion in power tools. This turning point led to the question of whether battery-powered tools are the future of the jobsite. Since cordless tools are now a very common practice in many trades, this technology was groundbreaking for the industry.

Milwaukee Tool continues to develop groundbreaking tools to make every job easier, more efficient, and safer.

The Rise of Cordless Power Tools

Cordless tools are now rising in popularity more than ever before. These types of tools previously had a reputation for not being as good as the mains equivalents. However, this reputation is now being shaken off across all sectors.

cordless power tool

As the demand for power tools increases and now that the use of lithium-ion batteries is becoming more widespread, the cordless tools sector is projected to dominate the market’s growth over the coming years.

According to The Construction Index, a study by market analyst Technavio showed that in 2022, cordless tools accounted for 81.1% of sales in the UK professional power tools market, with corded tools making up just 18.9%. They state that as recently as 2018, that split was 50-50, according to the European Power Tool Association.

Final Thoughts

While the tool market demonstrates huge growth, the voice of the tradespeople clearly points towards a particular dominant brand. MyJobQuote’s poll of 299 professionals reveals DeWalt as the ultimate tool brand, securing a significant 43.8% of the votes. This preference coincides with DeWalt’s century-long reputation for reliability, innovation, and commitment to meeting the demanding needs of people on the job site.

Following closely behind are Makita and Milwaukee, which are both very respected brands with their own strengths and dedicated user bases, highlighting the competitive nature of the tools market.

It seems that the increasing dominance of cordless power tools, with lithium-ion technology driving efficiency and convenience, will shape the landscape of tool selection for tradespeople moving forward.

Ultimately, the findings of this poll offer some valuable insight into the brands that professionals trust and rely on to get the job done.
