When hiring a handyman, there are a few things worth checking so you feel confident you’ve found a competent and trusted contractor. You don’t need any qualifications to become an odd job man or a man with a van, so here are some things you can check for:
1. Make sure they have public liability insurance. This will protect you if any damage to your property or persons occurs.
2. Accreditation – There are a few accreditation bodies that handymen can be a part of, such as the Association of Certified Handyman Professions (AHCP).
3. A completed apprenticeship where they’ve learnt on-the-job experience.
4. Courses in property maintenance or multi-skills.
A handyman performs general property maintenance and repairs. So, they will complete odd jobs around the home that can involve multiple skills.
Legally, handymen can do minor electrical work, such as moving/adding switches and plug sockets and changing light fittings.

Some handymen may do tiling, but it’s worth checking if they specialise in tiling. If not, it might be best to hire a tiler.
A handyman completes building maintenance and repairs. So, their main jobs can be unblocking toilets, appliance installation, fitting blinds and curtains, minor electrical work and putting up flat-pack furniture.
