    Internal Walls

We hired Matt to split a large room into two using stud walls. We also wanted new sockets put in and the lighting sorted. Also agreed was removal of a stud wall cupboard and the addition of a new socket in that room also. Job started off well enough - but Matt has clearly overestimated his own skills and could not finish the job. The agreement was also 1/3 up front, but my mistake was trusting him when said he need a 'bit more' here and there - he's now had most of the money from us and left us with the following: - unsafe electrics - we have no lighting upstairs as Matt assured us he could fit new lighting and sockets. Clearly this wasn't the case. A couple of electricians have been out and have no idea how he's managed to bodge it so badly. Ultimately this close to Christmas we now have to exist with minimal lighting until the new year - walls built squarely out of plumb - due to the above, multiple additional purchases of plasterboard and 2x4 wood. Matt left the offcuts outside, which when I went to take them to the tip I realised they were basically barely used. So we paid for materials not used and just wasted - really poor finish on the joinery - for example, the wrong door casing was bought (too wide) so needed to be reduced. Not done with a plane, presumably with a chisel as the wood is wobbly - wood fitted poorly with literally the wrong nails and/or screws. On removing the door casings, the cavity left behind (due to the aforementioned incorrect sizing being bought) had been padded out with random bits of wood which weren't even secured - door hung upside down. Went for a cheaper door so it's not solid wood - it tells you on the door which way to hang it and still managed to do it the wrong way! - doors not hung to allow them to be closed, so they stuck on the carpet - instead of buying skirting to match the existing, he has bought the cheapest stuff. When I spoke to him about this he told me I 'should have realised' from his quote that it would be cheaper stuff?! When the invoice states X length of skirting I don't think it's my responsibility to then go and cross-reference that with local lumber yard prices? - agreement was carpet would be relaid when the job was completed. This wasn't done. However, Matt made sure to buy himself a carpet stretcher which he took with him leaving the box for us to get rid of Some other points: - instead of using the local lumber yard or any other cheaper place to buy materials, he bought everything from B&Q, hence elevated retail prices - instead of spending £10~ (literally they were on sale at £7.99 when I looked) on the requested sockets, he bought the silver ones for twice the price. Yes, they look lovely, but this wasn't discussed, and clearly with everything else purchased it used up the budget much more quickly - I've never known of a tradesperson show up no earlier than 11am. This meant we had him here all over the weekend one weekend, which is generally fine, but irritating when it's because he doesn't start at an early time! So now I have paid £240 for a joiner to complete the doors which needed almost completely refitting. It took two days hence the high price. Also need the electrics doing which will possibly be upwards of £1k as we need a partial rewire. Matt should have refused to touch this. He has made a bad job worse. I will also need a plasterer (£150 quoted for, hoping to have this done before Christmas), and someone to lay the carpets back down. Incidentally, I initially didn't realise he had clearly decided he wasn't coming back until he left me a voicemail telling me he'd "be there first thing tomorrow" (that would have been a Tuesday), didn't show up, and then didn't show up to complete the electrics on the Friday as previously agreed. When I finally managed to get in touch with him, he blamed his phone not working for not showing up. He then didn't show up *that day* to finish off the work, clearly realising he wasn't able or maybe just didn't have the available funds. I don't want him here now even if he did agree to come back. I did speak to a couple of his previous customers who were happy with his work, and because his pricing seemed fair (NOT the cheapest I was given - which according to Matt is a reason why I shouldn't have expected the correct materials to have been used) and I could see he was quite newly set up (and it was nearing Christmas) I decided to hire him. I would recommend any previous customers to have your electrics checked by a professional as I am worried that with the utterly terrible job he did with ours, he is leaving other people with dangerous wiring. Matt has been paid 90% of the amount agreed, an in my estimation I will have to pay another £500 to have the smaller bits done. Not (generously, I feel) including the cost of a rewire as that might have been needed anyway but I am upset and angry that I am out of pocket with a bunch of half-done jobs done badly.
