I initially believed the trader was trustworthy. He explained his charges to me and I approved them. I paid him a prepayment for parts needed for the job, but he never started the work nor brought the parts he claimed to have ordered to my property for installation. Instead, he chose to take on other jobs available at the property. When I asked for the price of these additional jobs, he kept postponing giving me the charges. He also had the bad practice of turning up at my property after 17:30 without informing me, and on several occasions he did not turn up on days he said he would. He even brought a stranger with him to carry out electrical work without informing me beforehand. Then he suddenly disappeared without finishing the job, leaving the work in a dangerous state with live, unprotected wires exposed, creating the risk of an electrical accident for anyone unaware of the hazard. He also took the parking permit for the development’s secure car park and did not return it, despite my repeated requests and reminders. The electrician sent invoices from his business, “Property Maintenance,” without any postal address included. The invoices listed exorbitant charges that were never disclosed to me for pre-approval, and the work remained incomplete. He insisted on being paid first for the unfinished jobs. He still refused to provide a postal address, even after many requests and reminders. Wanting to put an end to the ongoing aggravation, I decided to pay him. I sent a bank transfer for what I believed was a fair amount to cover the cost of supplying and fitting the parts, plus an additional goodwill amount on top of the prepayment he had already received. I withheld £250, to be paid once he returned the security car park permit. Throughout this process, I sent him many emails expressing my dissatisfaction with his behaviour, which I found concerning and unprofessional.
