Install Composite Fence and Gate
I cannot recommend this builder based on my experience. The workmanship throughout the project fell well below the standard I expected. The fence was installed directly onto the sloping wall capping without compensating for the fall, resulting in the entire fence leaning noticeably. Profiling the bottom rail or the use suitable wedges would have ensured the fence remained plumb. The capping rail supplied was also unsuitable - was only just shy of the width of the wall itself and therefore provided no overhang to protect the tops of the fence boards. As a result, sections of the timber were left exposed to the weather instead of being properly protected by the capping. There were numerous other issues that had to be raised during the work. The paintwork appeared to have received only a single coat in most areas, despite agreeing that the fence would be spray-painted off-site to avoid damaging the newly rendered wall. Paint was nevertheless splashed onto the fresh render. There were also problems with untreated structural timbers, poor finishing details, and several aspects of the gate construction that did not match what had been agreed. The gate was specified to be constructed from solid 22mm tongue and groove boards, however it was instead built using feather edge boards nailed to three pieces of 4" by 1.5" timber ledges. Rather than being able to rely on the builder to complete the work to an acceptable standard, I found myself continually having to leave work and inspecting the work, identifying defects, and providing detailed instructions on how it should be completed. This was both time-consuming and frustrating, particularly with a tenant due to move into the property. In the end, we lost confidence in the quality of the workmanship and agreed to stop the job before it was completed. We paid the builder for the materials he had supplied, but had to employ another contractor to rectify the defective work and complete the project properly. This resulted in additional cost, delays, and considerable inconvenience. Overall, my experience was one of poor workmanship, lack of attention to detail, and failure to carry out the work to the agreed specification. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this builder or use his services again.
