Stored Oil

Modern oil storage tanks come in a range of shapes and sizes and are commonly made from plastic or steel. Depending on the installation and location, secondary containment may be required to reduce the risk of pollution from an oil spill. This can be provided by an integrally bunded tank or a separate bund. Where a bund is required, it should generally be able to hold at least 110% of the capacity of the tank.

Oil tanks also need to be positioned with fire safety in mind. For example, current guidance generally recommends keeping tanks at least 1.8m away from non-fire-rated buildings, openings in fire-rated buildings and liquid fuel appliance flue terminals, unless suitable fire protection is provided. Oil storage tank installations must also comply with the relevant Building Regulations or regional requirements.

In England and Wales, OFTEC registered technicians can self-certify certain installation work under the Competent Person Scheme. If you use an installer who is not registered with an appropriate scheme, Building Control involvement may be required. In Scotland, a building warrant may also be needed depending on the work.

LPG Tanks

If you're installing a new LPG heating system or changing from bottled gas, LPG can be stored in an above-ground or underground tank. The type and position of the tank will depend on factors such as the property, available space, access for deliveries and relevant safety requirements.

LPG tank installation can involve preparing a suitable base or excavation, installing the tank and connecting the pipework to the heating system. Gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is registered for the relevant type of LPG work.

Some LPG suppliers also offer remote tank monitoring, which can track fuel levels and help arrange deliveries when the tank is running low. The services available will depend on the supplier and tank arrangement.

Oil Tank Installation Cost

There are many different sizes and types of oil storage tank available, so installation costs will vary depending on the tank, location, access, base requirements and pipework. A local heating contractor can assess the property and explain the options available.
