Plaster Skimming Contractors

Plastering is a skill that takes practice to achieve a smooth finish. DIY enthusiasts may be able to tackle smaller areas, particularly outdoors or in garages where the finish may be less noticeable, but ceilings and complete interior walls can be more difficult. There are two main types of plastering, wet plastering and dry lining. Both methods may require a finishing skim to create a smooth surface ready for decoration. Plaster skimming is usually completed in stages, starting with the application of the plaster before it is trowelled to create an even finish and left to dry.

If a smooth finish isn't achieved, it can be difficult to rectify once the plaster has set without sanding or applying another coat. For larger or more visible areas, you may prefer to hire a plasterer rather than attempt the work yourself.

Hiring a Plastering Contractor

When it is time to contact and hire a plastering contractor, it can be useful to plan ahead, particularly if you have a specific timescale in mind. You can hire a plasterer who works independently or use a local plastering company. One way to find a plasterer is to ask neighbours, family or friends if they have used someone for similar work.

If that option is not available, you can search online or use local directories to find plasterers in your area. Contact at least three and ask for references where available, along with a full written quotation detailing materials, the proposed start date and estimated completion date. You can also use the free quote service on this site by clicking the "post your job" button to have local tradespeople get in touch.

Once you have written quotations, compare the prices and what is included in each one. Rather than choosing on price alone, consider examples of previous work, customer feedback, timescales and the scope of the quotation.

Plaster Skimming Prices

Applying a plaster skim coat to an average room may cost around £250-£400 depending on the size of the room and whether the ceiling is included. If only the walls are skimmed, there may be a noticeable difference between the newly finished walls and the existing ceiling, so you may want to include the ceiling if it suits your budget. For plasterers quoting hourly rates rather than a fixed price, expect to pay around £25-£30 per hour.
