Roof Cleaning
I ordered a new roof from Adam Wales: pitched roof, semi detached house. I ordered the works from him at the end of November and agreed to pay the money up front because he offered a £1000 discount for up-front payment. I thought this was reasonable because it would allow him to pay for materials and staff upfront and the work would be done sooner. He told me that the scaffolding would go up on a Wednesday (in Nov 2023) and he would be there the next day with a skip to strip the roof and start the job. The scaffolders did turn up and put up scaffolding all the way around my house, but the next day Adam didn't turn up (no skip either). Two weeks later and still no roofers or contact so I chased up with him. He gave excuses about the weather (which hadn't been great) and also sourcing the tiles (which made less sense as I didn't order any special tiles and he had all the money upfront). He said the job would be his first priority in the New Year, so we had all of the Christmas and New Year period with scaffolding all around the house banging and creaking in the winds. Jan 5th and he texted me saying that he's ready to start work "first thing" on Monday morning (Jan 8th) with the work being completed by the following weekend, even sending a follow up text when I didn't reply straight away! Monday morning came and went and no one turned up, and no contact was made with me. Tuesday and Wednesday were the same. By this time, I had read reviews about Adam Wales on other websites (Wales Roofing, Sheffield | Roofing Services - Yell ) and so really just wanted to get my money back and find someone else who would do the work on time. I took advice from Citizens Advice who said I could cancel as he hadn't given me, in writing, a "cooling off period" (they also reported him to Trading Standards for not doing this, as it is an offence. I sent a formal cancellation letter by email and he got back to me straight away admitting fault for the length of time and promising the work will be started by the following weekend. At this point I couldn't trust him as what he was saying was no different to what he'd said previously so I told him the cancellation of the works was final. After this, he has still failed to pay back any of the money. After (more) chasing up he said he would refund after 30 days (because it was "company policy" - yet he is a sole trader ad there is no written policy on refunds) and yet as of today (27th February 2024) he hasn't paid back a penny. He claims he wants to keep £1300 to cover the cost of the scaffolding, as this was paid upfront. I asked for proof of payment for this amount, yet he has failed to give me anything. From me finally cancelling the works on the 11th January until 27th February, the scaffolding has remained attached to my house. A few weeks back, the scaffolders came round to my house whilst I was out, because Adam had instructed them to take down the scaffolding without telling me, even though I told him I needed to be at home for them to gain access to the back. Adam then gave the scaffolder my number and he called me directly, which is probably a breach of GDPR but at least I could deal with the scaffolder directly. Today, 27th February, the scaffolding has finally come down after I arranged myself with the company a mutually convenient date and time. Speaking with the owner of the scaffolders (Matthew Grayson of Sheaf scaffolding, Sheffield) I found out that, in fact, the scaffolders have not been paid by Adam, meaning the £1300 he wanted to keep he has attempted to gain fraudulently. The scaffolding is finally down, but I have a roof in the same condition as when I ordered a new roof 3 months ago and, if anything, it's probably in a worse condition. In addition, £6000+ of my money is with Adam Wales (if he hasn't already spent it all) and he seems content to keep hold of it until I push and push. Because the scaffolding was up so long and because Adam still has my money, I cannot get anyone else to replace my roof. My experience with Adam Wales has been extremely stressful for me and my family and isn't over. Even though it may affect his revenue and therefore his ability to pay me back, I strongly urge you to remove him from your website, as he is honestly one of the worst contractors I have ever worked with.

Adam was incredibly prompt and professional with his work when he refelted our roof. Adam was also well and fairly priced on comparison to other tradies who quoted extortion. We will be using him for future renovations!
