On Sunday 9th February, I made an agreement with Lawrence Price at Price It Right to start work on Monday 10th February - Lawrence said this work would take two days and would be completed by end of Tuesday 11th Feb. The job was to remove all concrete from the front of my house, and lay flags to replace. At first, Lawrence seemed pleasant and we agreed that the entire job would cost £1400. Lawrence assured me that the work would look nice when complete; he advised me to keep a small portion of concrete intact under my bay window on the promise that it would look good. When I arrived home on Monday 10th, all concrete had been removed apart from that under the window. The remaining concrete would have looked out of place when the new stone flags were laid, so I raised this with Lawrence. He asked for another £100 to remove this concrete. I agreed; more work means more money. On the night of Monday 10th Feb, I sent photographs of the exact stone flags I wanted Lawrence to lay. I sent Lawrence a £600 deposit - this was to cover the costs of the stones, and was not payment for the job. It was agreed Lawrence would be paid when the job was completed. On Tuesday 11th Feb, Lawrence did not arrive to finish laying the flags. He told me he could not get the stones locally, and would have to drive to Birmingham to collect them. He said he would come on Thursday 13th Feb and lay the stones, completing the job. On the Wednesday, I contacted Lawrence to see if he had the stones. He said they were now being delivered on the Saturday, but he would now come on the Friday to level the ground ready to lay the flags on the Saturday. Friday came and Lawrence didn't show up. The Saturday had bad weather, so we then agreed that he would come on the Monday to lay the stones. I got home from work on Monday evening to see that Lawrence had laid a sample of different stones than I had asked for. I raised this with Lawrence and he claimed that the delivery company had sent the wrong stones. Lawrence then said he would have to wait for the money to be refunded for this purchase before he could order the correct stones and finish the job. Two days later, Lawrence said that he was having trouble getting the stones I had asked for. He offered alternative stones, but I was unhappy with these. I told Lawrence that I would organise delivery of the correct stones, and asked him to refund the £600 deposit when he got it back from the previous company. Lawrence was silent for two days, and then ignored my previous message, telling me he had ordered the original stones. I told him that I already said I would organise delivery of the stones myself, and to cancel this order as it was not necessary. I asked again for him to refund my £600 deposit as I had ordered the stones myself, as I had told him previously. Lawrence then refused to refund the £600 deposit for the flags, instead claiming it as payment for the work he had done so far: Lawrence claimed that he had worked 3 days, with a team of 3 men, and had removed two lots of rubbish, as well as laying 2 1/2 tonnes of grit sand. Lawrence was unaware that there was somebody present in the house on the days he had come to work; on two of these days, Lawrence had simply sat outside in his van for 1 - 1 1/2 hours before driving off. He had laid the grit sand on another day, and had taken one lot of rubbish to the skip (there was still some of this rubbish in my garden until recently). All this considered, the £600 deposit was agreed as a deposit for the stones, and not for any work done. I have a record of this and all other communication with Lawrence. Because Lawrence refused to refund £600 flag deposit money, I told him I did not feel comfortable with him completing the job as he had broken our agreement. I told Lawrence that once he refunded my deposit money, I would pay him a fair rate for the work done. Lawrence proceeded to ignore my requests for the deposit money, until he finally replied, offering me £100 of the £600 deposit back. I said this was unacceptable, and then offered Lawrence £275 for the work he had done. I believed Lawrence should still be paid for his work, but his work was not worth £600. Again, this £600 was a deposit placed to cover the costs of stone flags, and not payment for any work. I felt I would not see any money back if I did not bargain with Lawrence and agree to pay him at least some of the deposit money. Lawrence has made promises on multiple occasions to transfer me the agreed £225 of my deposit money back. Every time I ask him to pay the money into my bank, he gives me a day he will pay and then does not pay. This has now gone on since late February. During the upset caused by the covid pandemic, I relaxed my requests for my money back for a period of 8 weeks. I have now resumed asking for the agreed £225 refund; on three separate occasions, Lawrence has promised to pay in a certain date, and then failed to pay. He ignores my messages for days on end, and then sets another date he will pay. When that day comes, he does not pay and instead sets another day. Lawrence likes to make excuse after excuse in hopes that any disgruntled 'customers' will just go away. I gather from some of the other reviews for Price It Right that I am not the first person he has done this too, and I certainly will not be the last. Lastly, Lawrence likes to simply deny any negative reviews placed against him. I have months of texts and correspondence and am happy to share all of this with anyone wondering whether to hire Lawrence. I would strongly advise against it. You will experience frequent delays and he may even try to steal deposit money. Good luck getting hold of Lawrence - he's masterful in his ability to ignore you and postpone anything he agrees upon.
