I think the job was outside of the scope of competence for HBlockwork. He had to attend the property three times in order to complete the task, and the end result is only marginally acceptable. Harvey is a very friendly chap, but he does not communicate well, which resulted in the job not being satisfactory after the first attempt. He laid the bricks with the air holes at the top surface, which I could not comprehend anyone would do. He said that I had misguided him in my requirements, but I am not a qualified bricklayer. We came to an agreement that I would buy more materials, and he would return to lay another layer, this time with the dress edge uppermost. This means that the job has cost more than the initial agreement. He returned a second time and carried out the remedial work, and was asking me to pay him a further £100, which I refused and he accepted that. After the second attempt, I went to inspect his work only to find that my monoblock driveway was covered in cement. He had to return another day to clean this off, which he did manage, but should not have occurred in the first instance. The layers of concrete are super thick. When I pointed that out, Harvey said it was because the original wall is old and uneven, however, I would have thought that the second layer would have been laid on a level surface, so should not have been so thick. Sadly I feel unable to recommend him as the experience has been somewhat negative, however, if considering him, as his price was more realistic than some other quotes we got, I would recommend that any prospective job is discussed fully before starting. Harvey was pleasant to deal with, and always willing to return and attempt to remedy the problems, but I think the problems should not have arisen in the first place for an adequately qualified contractor.
