Replace Socket and Install Doorbell Camera
The electrician arrived on time and completed replacing a faulty washing machine socket with a new one I had pre-ordered. This part of the work has caused no issues since. However, a second job on the same visit has proven more problematic. The electrician installed a wired doorbell camera and confirmed it was properly connected to the existing wiring. Within days, though, the doorbell began sending persistent low-battery notifications, despite supposedly being on continuous hardwired power. I reported the fault on Friday, and the electrician returned on Monday to investigate. On testing, he found the old doorbell transformer was outputting a lower voltage than the camera required — but rather than taking responsibility for this oversight, he attributed the issue to my having said the old transformer "could work," despite me having no technical basis for that assessment. As a professional installing electrical equipment, I'd expect an electrician to independently verify voltage compatibility against manufacturer specifications, rather than relying on a homeowner's assumption. I raised this directly, and while he acknowledged the installation was based on my statement, he did not accept that verifying voltage output against the doorbell's specifications was his responsibility as the qualified professional carrying out the work. A disappointing follow-through on the doorbell installation, where a simple voltage check before installation would have avoided a return visit and an uncomfortable conversation about who was responsible for the fault. I have had to charge the camera battery and use it without wiring for the time being. I still paid £90 for the job, and I could have installed the camera myself if I wanted battery connection as this required no electrician expertise. The electrician has given a separate quotation to fix the wiring issue and asked if I expected him to do it for free when I questioned it.
