Partial Bathroom Refurbishment and Installation
After eight weeks of lost money, wasted time and stress, I honestly can't recommend Stephen Hearn. We hired Stephen to renovate our bathroom and were originally told the job would take around six working days. Eight weeks later, it still wasn't finished. In the end, we gave up waiting for him to come back and had to pay other tradespeople to finish the job and fix some of the issues. The problems started straight away. Stephen was supposed to start on 15 June but didn't turn up and didn't let us know he wasn't coming. He eventually started about a week later. From then on, it became a constant cycle of being told he was coming, only for him to cancel or not show up. Looking back through our messages afterwards, we counted 13 occasions where he said he would be attending and then didn't. Many times, we only found out because we chased him ourselves. The excuses varied, and on one occasion he literally told us he couldn’t come over because he’d had “a few too many drinks” the night before. The financial side was just as frustrating. Throughout the project, we were asked to pay for additional items outside the original quote, which we did because we just wanted the bathroom completed. When we later checked everything we'd paid against the original quotation, we found what appeared to be duplicate charges for certain items. We raised this and asked for the money to be refunded, but despite repeated follow-ups, we never received it. We were also charged for a skip that was never provided. Stephen agreed that the charge should be refunded, but we still never received the money. The biggest concern for us was the extractor fan and electrical work. Stephen drilled the hole for the extractor fan, but when the electrician he had arranged came to install it, we were told the hole couldn't be used and that a new one would need to be drilled elsewhere. We asked Stephen to come back and sort it out. That was the last time we saw him. Before this, we had also paid Stephen money that we understood would cover the electrician's charges. When we later spoke directly with the electrician, he told us he hadn't been paid for that work. As a result, we had to arrange payment directly ourselves in order to get the job finished. We then had to bring in another tradesperson to drill a new extractor hole and make good the original one, which added yet more cost to the project. While carrying out that work, the tradesperson discovered a live, uncovered electrical wire concealed inside the wall. We had no idea it was there and were very concerned when it was brought to our attention. There were also other parts of the bathroom that were left unfinished or needed redoing. For example, the mastic around the bath wasn't completed properly. Stephen acknowledged this himself and told us it needed to be redone. He said he would come back to fix it, but he never did. What makes this whole experience so frustrating is that we gave him every opportunity to put things right. We weren't expecting perfection and were happy to allow mistakes to be corrected. We repeatedly asked him to come back and finish the work, chased the refunds he had agreed to pay, and tried to resolve matters directly. Eventually, after waiting eight weeks for what was supposed to be a six-day bathroom renovation, we had no choice but to move on and hire other people to finish the job. That meant spending even more money on work we believed should already have been completed. We have since started County Court proceedings to recover money that we believe is owed to us and have retained extensive evidence relating to the issues above. Overall, this experience cost us a huge amount of time, money and stress. I would strongly encourage anyone considering hiring Stephen to carry out thorough due diligence first. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we would not use him again.
Bathroom Installation
Very pleased. Stephen removed old floor tiles then laid a new vinyl floor. He then sourced and installed a new combined toilet and bidet, a lovely new bath, with the help of his dad, and a new vanity and sink unit. All work was completed very tidily with no mess left and all waste was removed. But best of all he fixed the leak I had had since November, which no less than six different plumbers from HomeServe had failed to do. Hence the need for a new bathroom . So yes very pleased. Highly recommended.
