I first caught the gardening bug after a friend who tends the garden, at Lamb House in Rye, showed me a ‘Beautyberry’ shrub adorned with the most stunning metallic royal purple berries; it was then that gardening became the new Rock ‘n’ Roll in my life.
To my delight, I discovered that with a bit of applied science and observation, those elusive ‘green fingers’ were available to all. Plant shade-loving plants in dappled shade and sun-loving plants in a sunny aspect. If they prefer damp conditions, then keep the soil moist and provide drier soil for those plants that prefer it dry, easy. Once you’ve worked out the basics you’re halfway there – only halfway mind, as you’ll never stop learning but that’s part of the fun.
As for the ‘Handy’ bit; my earliest childhood memory was Christmas morning sat on the kitchen step with my shiny new present, a tool kit, which I then proceeded to take apart using the tools it contained. I was simply curious as to how things were put together. Mother, however, didn’t see it that way and I received a right ticking-off, but l was simply reverse engineering, albeit at the age of five.
I still enjoy fixing broken things and making good whenever possible, don’t we all?
My other job is as a singer/musician, so don’t be surprised if you hear me singing while going about my business. Oh… and I can rustle up a mean carbonara too!
Frances.
