About

Here at Ernest Rose our aim is to emphasise the value in using authentic joinery skills and techniques to revive the character of rural and period properties, as well as to help preserve these rapidly declining skills for future generations. Our keen interest in the historic environment is the key driving force in our work as we look to echo the honest workmanship carried out by craftsmen of the past. As we look to develop our skills through research and practice we are constantly uncovering or rediscovering designs and ideas whilst re-imagining them in regards to contemporary use, and it is in this way that we link the past to the present. From the hand selection of raw materials to the research, design, and application of our skills using traditional hand tools, we provide a continuity of service that is time-honoured and designed to help us craft timeless creations for your traditional home.

David Bryan lead joiner
David has a passion for learning and has an interest in pretty much any subject you can throw at him, not least the subject of history. Studying history at university brought about a keen interest in the historic environment. After deciding that he wanted to work in heritage, David trained as a joiner in order to pursue a career in building conservation and restoration, working directly on the buildings that he became so passionate about.

David spent many years working as a restoration joiner working on a variety of historic buildings and it was through this work that he learned much about traditional building techniques and the tools used by craftsmen of the past. With traditional skills and knowledge being in rapid decline, David wanted to give them a new purpose by offering his skills and knowledge to those who want to sympathetically restore and revive the character of their period homes and listed properties.

doors
The function and design of doors has evolved throughout the ages, from the highly decorative medieval plank and batten door with their heavy iron work and sometimes intricate carving, to the functional framed doors of the late Middle Ages often with low arches and skilled construction, and the classically inspired panelled door that is prevalent today. Each door we create is designed and made to last a lifetime, as well as designed to reflect the character of your home.

floors
Here at Ernest Rose we love the idea of laying the foundations for a well-designed room and we believe that solid wood flooring offers the kind of authenticity that period home owners look for. Solid wood flooring acts as a natural insulator as well as providing a unique aesthetic for the room. We hand select timber boards up to 600mm wide which can be laid in a variety of ways to suit the character of your home.

COMMISSIONS
There are many fixtures and fittings that could be addressed in a period home including staircases, traditional panelling and other decorative elements, not to mention the stand-alone furniture that makes up a functioning home. We welcome a range of commissions and would love to hear about you and your project.
