Hiring this man to replace a porch was one of the worst decisions I’ve made. He originally estimated 4-6 weeks to do the work and agreed to start on 10^th October 2022. I paid a deposit of £800 at that stage. In fact, due to an over-run on another job I had done, he wasn’t able to start until two days later. While demolishing the existing porch, he broke the window next to the front door. He promised to repair it – but never did. He dug out the footings and filled the trench with concrete and, on 2^nd November (3 weeks after starting) advised that the footings were now complete and I was due to pay the next stage payment. He then started to lay the first layer of bricks – when I checked, I found he was laying the wall too far out from the house and it would be beyond the building line. Unfortunately, his footings were in the wrong place. I insisted that the bricks be removed and re-laid at the correct distance from the house – but, on his second attempt, one end of the wall was the correct 158cm, the other was 165cm – so the porch would not be square! There were also gaps between the bricks rather than being filled with mortar. I then asked if he was still on target to complete the build within the original 4-6 weeks. He pointed out that the contract specified a MINIMUM of 6 weeks – he could effectively take as long as he liked to do the work. His contract also specified that once the work started, he was entitled to payment IN FULL for the job – not just the work actually done – so, if you got tired of his prevarication or his poor workmanship and tried to fire him, he would try to get the full price from you. He did, in fact, offer to accept a ‘token’ payment of £500 to release me from the contract. Thankfully, I had never signed the contract and had ample evidence of him being in breach of any agreement. He claimed his contract had been written in conjunction with trading standards and verified by them before use. This is a lie. I spoke to Trading Standards. They were clear that they would not approve such contracts and, in fact, were investigating Davies & Co. In the end, he stopped work – leaving a concrete mixer and other tools on site. I found a hire company’s name on the mixer and contacted them – they had apparently ‘lost’ the mixer and were glad to get it back. He never did return to collect his other equipment. I tried to get Davies to repair the window he had broken. I eventually arranged a repair myself and sent him an invoice for the cost.

As a company we have been in business for 27 years and we very much have a customer first policy and mindset and everything is geared towards looking after the Individual needs of our customers. As a customer facing business dealing with the general public we unfortunately sometimes encounter some not very good people who lack our high levels of honesty and integrity. The work in this contract was stopped by ourselves as we deemed it not safe to work there due to the highly unpredictable and difficult circumstances that the customer constantly caused us. The final decision rested on when the customer reproduced the original contract but altered. The agreed terms and even forged our company signature in the process. Due to our due diligence we spotted this. We have full evidence to support our findings We will always look after our customers first but will not place ourselves in dangerous situations
